Common Sense part 2

Stay in your own lane, it’s less traffic there!

In an earlier post, I mentioned a need to get rest. There’s a trend now in our culture that suggest that “money never sleeps”, or “I’ll sleep when I make my first million”. Well if you didn’t know, most of time the only ones trying to live and keep up with this philosophy, are the ones who actually believed the one making the claim, really do sleep. On reality tv, we’ve seen “successful” musicians and businessmen making theses claims of early morning and sleepless nights, but you have to remember that reality isn’t REALITY. Yes, of course you will have days like this, especially if you want to be successful, but there has to be balance and this can not become the norm in our lives. Our bodies need rest. In my experience, most makes made in haircutting and performance are sleep related. However, im no expert on the subject, so here are a few links to check out.

Common Sense Part 1

Stay in your own lane, it’s less traffic there!

Everyone of us is striving for success. However That “success” isn’t the same for everyone, but never the less to accomplish our goals and dreams gives us and will continue to  give us  a sense of gratification. But what does it take to become successful? That’s right, HARD WORK and DETERMINATION! But why is it that we have so many hard working people in the industry, on their feet day and night, busting their tails, and NO-MORE SUCCESSFUL THAN THEY WERE six months, a year ago, some even ten years ago. Same “tight-wad” clients, drawer full of clippers that were supposed to take fading game to the next level (but didn’t), up to your neck-strip in debt, no savings, and BURNT OUT!!

Words are powerful, but useless when you lack understanding of them.

Success is a noun (person, place or thing) NOT A VERB (action), therefore Successful people are not determined by what they “do”, but rather by what they “become”.  And since we are speaking in the present tense, we are talking about perseverance  to become AND stay SUCCESSFUL (a state of being, not doing)

Here are my top reasons why people DON’T succeed

  • Misunderstood purpose

Because we don’t understand and know the purpose of life here, many of us go on, day by day just existing. Achieving goals that only bring temporary satisfaction.

  • No vision

Kind of hard to go somewhere you cant see.

  • No integrity

Need I say more!!

  • No discipline

Yes, your talent can open up opportunities for you, but a lack of discipline will make it obsolete

  • No Budget

How much money has burned through your pockets?

  • Consumer minded

You can have a good budget and still blow it. If your budget has you spending out as much money as  is coming in, then you’ve still drop the ball.

  • NO SLEEP

Keep it up! You will pass out and die if you adopt the thinking that “money never sleeps”:BECAUSE PEOPLE DO!

If you understood your purpose, had a written visionplan, showed some integrity, had some discipline, made a budget, and STOP BUYING CRAP, you wouldn’t have to be up all night chasing money.

Stay in your own lane, it’s less traffic there.

I wonder how many of us are up this morning scrolling through Facebook, scrolling through Instagram, and other media outlets, looking at the work and the success of the barbers, stylists, nail technicians, makeup artists, etc., that we call celebs?  While there is a great deal of us who find inspiration and motivation in the success of others and the great work that they put out, there is a even greater deal of us, that feel envious. We troll through the pictures of those we call celebs in the industry, looking for flaws to justify our feelings of why we feel that we should be where they are and it should be “me” in the limelight.

But let’s consider this, have you realize that your car, clothes, home, the very food you eat, the person(s) that you feel you so deserve to have as a client has never given you one red cent towards anything you have nor you’re quality of living.

Now, if you feel that your quality of living sucks,  that’s a whole other issue that starts with your mind, and that, I’ll address at a later date.

Sure it would be great to see your work in movies, magazines and reigning all over social media, but if you feel that this is what’s going to make you successful, then my friend, you have misunderstood that most of the people we admire or envy in the industry, were already successful in their own right before the limelight.

There are two types of people that I’ve personally seen in this so-called limelight.
  1. The person who’s really trendy and hot for a moment and gone the next.
  2. The person who’s been around for years, staying relevant and fresh.

The difference,  one works really hard seeking for the attention of others and other, works really hard giving attention to others. You have one who works hard to be relevant and to get their shot at fame, and the other who works hard, sharpening their skills because they just love what they do. And most likely, doesn’t even realize that they are a “celeb” or that there’s a limelight.

I personally want longevity and consistency in my career, but if it’s all about “me”, what happens when I die? The legends I know of, “live on” because of the impact that they had others.

Let me know what you think. Until next time

ARE YOU STILL TAKING WALK-INS ONLY?

Ahh… the famous debate between appointments only vs. taking walk-ins only. Have you can consider lately switching from taking walk-ins only to appointments? But the thought of appointment-only, missing out on potential clients as they walk-in, and get clienteles to commit to a schedule perplexes you.

As I sit typing because I have a “no call, no show”, here are some reasons why I STILL preferred to do appointment only versus walk-ins

  • It gives me more control of my business

After having a long, hard day at shop, somebody come walks in the door at 8 o’clock and  asks, can they  get “squeezed” in real fast. There is nothing more frustrating than having clients thinking they can come when I get ready to..

  • It helps me to plan my day, my week, and my month, my year

Many of us know what it’s like to miss out on family functions and events because your stuck at the shop because you have a bunch of people sitting in the shop and you don’t know when you’re going to be done

  • Helps me with my budgeting

If you set your appointment book up correctly, it allow you to get a overview of your potential earnings. That way you can plan financially and get out of living from check from (or in our case, head to head)

  • It strengthens my brand

Unfortunately, we live in a different era where barbers and hairdressers are no longer looked at as prominent persons in society. Taking charge of the business allows people to see how serious you are, and they in turn will take your business seriously.

So… as this late client walks in now……Subscribe to my blog and let me know some of your other reasons of why you prefer to do appointment-only. And if you have some reasons that I have overlooked as of why one should continue to consider sticking to go walk-ins only, write below in the comments.

Myths and Facts about Hair Growth

originally posted by styleseat.com

Your tresses normally grow at a rate of about half an inch in a month. Plus, there are various factors such as your diet, hair care routine, genetic predisposition, and so on that affect hair growth.
However, there are a number of hair misconceptions associated with hair that often confuse people in taking the right decisions for promoting hair growth. Thus, given below are some common hair myths and facts.

Myth: Hair Trims Accelerate The Growth of Hair

Fact: Cutting and trimming your hair does not cause faster hair growth. Nevertheless, it helps remove split ends and damaged hair, thereby making your hair look healthy. Moreover, split ends make your hair brittle and increase the chances of hair breakage.

As split ends do not actually stop hair growth, damaged strands of hair with split ends keep growing at the usual rate but the hair fibers continue splitting further and travel up from the ends to the mid of the hair shaft.
This removes the charm of having long hair. Hence, it is suggested to get your hair trimmed at least every six to eight weeks.

Myth: Split Ends Can Be Repaired

Fact: People are often tricked to believe that split ends can be repaired but it is not a fact. The only way to get rid of split ends is to cut them off.
You can even trim your split ends with a pair of sharp scissors at your home itself. Most products that claim to repair split ends actually cover the strands of hair with silicon and wax to make them look healthy and glossy.

Myth: Washing Your Hair Daily Is Harmful For Your Hair

Fact: The frequency of washing your hair cannot be generalized because it depends on factors like the type of shampoo you use and your hair type. Nevertheless, you can wash your hair daily to make them clean and shiny, with or without shampoo.

If you like to shampoo your lustrous locks daily, make sure you opt for a gentle formula that contains ingredients like silicones or panthenol.
Plus, you can use a cleansing shampoo at least once in a month to remove product buildup. Those who have dry hair, though, should avoid washing their hair on a daily basis unless the weather is extremely hot and humid.
There is another popular doubt as to whether you should use the same shampoo over and over again or whether you should keep switching shampoos.
It is believed that using the same shampoo is not effective because your hair tends to become immune to it. However, there is no scientific backing behind this belief.

Myth: It Is Not Necessary To Use A Conditioner After Shampooing

Fact: Hair conditioners make your hair soft, sleek, and shiny, provided you choose the perfect type. Moreover, conditioners provide moisture to your hair and protect against damage caused by harsh weather, and the use of hair dryers.
Thus, you should choose a good conditioner depending on your hair type and texture, and apply it regularly after shampooing.
While using a hair conditioner, make sure you apply it correctly, that is, halfway down the hair strands up to the tips; there is no need to apply near the roots otherwise your hair are likely to become greasy and lanky.

Myth: Hair Texture Always Remains The Same

Fact: This is not true because factors like pregnancy, age, certain medications, chemotherapy, etc. can alter the hair texture, whether it is straight, smooth, or wavy. Shaving a baby’s head, however, does not alter the texture of his or her hair.

Myth: Excessive Brushing Causes Hair Loss

Fact: Brushing your hair two times in a day for about 10-15 minutes promotes circulation to the scalp and stimulates hair growth. Furthermore, it distributes the oils from your scalp to the rest of your tresses.
Nonetheless, excessive and vigorous brushing is not recommended because it increases the risk of hair damage and split ends. It does not cause hair loss, though.
